Students in the Material Science class visited the Wright Patterson Air Force Base where they used a scanning electron microscope (SEM). These microscopes use electrons to view items down to the nanometer size scale (a billionth of a meter). Students used the SEM to view an integrated circuit, a smartphone display screen, Lincoln on a penny, and the wings of a butterfly. In addition, students learned about civilian science careers at WPAFB and summer internship opportunities.
