Senate Bill 29: Implications for Districts

Ohio Senate Bill 29 took effect on October 24, 2024 and includes requirements around student data privacy, specifically relating to the monitoring of student activity on school-issued devices and the sharing of that data with third parties.
Miamisburg City Schools is committed to protecting student privacy while ensuring a safe and effetive learning environment. In compliance with Ohio SB 29, the district may monitor student devices for the following reasons:
Supporting educational use
When required by a court order or subpoena
If a device is lost or stolen
To respond to a serious threat to health or safety
When required by state or federal law
When required by funding programs
Miamisburg City Schools is providing this annual notice to parents/guardians regarding the monitoring of school-issued devices used by students. As part of this notice, we are providing advanced notice that the District and/or one of its technology providers intends to electronically access or monitor for reason #1.
If the District is triggered to electronically access a students' school-issued device for reasons #2-#6, the District will provide the parent and/or guardian with a 72-hour notice.
Parents or guardians with questions about the District's monitoring practices or data privacy policies are encourged to contact the Technology Department or review the district's Student Acceptable Use Policy.
