Dear Medlar View Parents,
I hope all of you enjoyed this past weekend, especially Sunday with the nice weather we had. Hopefully the nice weather will stick around for awhile. As we head into the first full week of May, here is a glance at what is happening:
Mrs. Sharts will be presenting lessons in the library this week around the principle of displaying positive attitudes towards others.
Tuesday: Today we will have our 4th quarter assembly presented by the Aullwood Audobon Society of Dayton. They will be presenting, “It’s Wild Out There: Feathers, Fur, and Forests”. This is an outstanding assembly that the students will greatly enjoy. A big thank you to PTO for sponsoring this assembly and all the quarterly assemblies this year!
Wednesday: Today is “National School Nurses Day”. We are very grateful to have Mrs. McNutt on our staff. Thanks for everything you do for us. In addition, today part of our fourth graders in Mrs. Springer and Ms. Nielson’s rooms will be going to the Newport Aquarium. Students need to bring a packed lunch and a drink in a bag that can be thrown away. On Thursday students in Ms. Jenkins and Mrs. DeDario/Mrs. Banzhof’s classes will be going to the Newport Aquarium. These classes need to bring a packed lunch with a drink in a bag that can be thrown away. Students need to make sure they wear comfortable walking shoes.
On Thursday this week our first grade classes will be having their “Mother’s Day Tea” starting at 2:45 p.m. If you have not RSVP'd, please do so to your child’s teacher.
Friday: Today our first grade students will be going to the Cincinnati Zoo. Students need to bring with them a packed lunch with a drink in a bag that can be thrown away. Please make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes as well.

Encouraging a Positive Attitude
Experts now believe that what really guarantees a person’s success is a positive attitude. It is more important than good grades, lots of money, exceptional talent and even “lucky circumstances”. In other words, if you expect and believe that something positive will happen, it often does. People who believe in themselves and expect to be successful usually are. Teaching your children to think positively can improve their grades, health, friendships, happiness and self-esteem. The good news is that a positive attitude—what we call optimism –can be taught to children at a very young age. And even children who always tend to expect the worst can be turned into hopeful ones with the right guidance.
Teach Your Children the Bright Side
1. Read your children inspirational books.
2. Teach your children how to talk positively to and about themselves. Let them know it is okay to say “ I did a great job on that test” or I’m a really good friend.”
3. Point out that bad events should be viewed as short-lived, not permanent, situations. Try always to point out something good along with the bad.
4. Explain to your child that people make mistakes, and everyone makes them including parents.
5. Encourage your child to set reasonable goals and encourage your children never to think of themselves as a failure. Today’s temporary failure is just an obstacle to over come.
6. Tell your children about yourself and others who have overcome obstacles.
7. See to it that your child faces serious problems such as illness, divorce or death of a loved one with the positive support of an adult who is always there for them.
8. Make sure your child eats healthy foods, exercises regularly and gets plenty of sleep. Good physical health is important to a good attitude.
