A Computer With A Lifetime Guarantee
Barry Neil Kauffman, one of our leading psychologists, says, “The way to change a person’s behavior is to first change the way he sees the world.” He tells us that people do the best they can consider the way they see themselves and the world. Other leading psychologists tell us the same thing but in another way. They say that our behavior is controlled by our self-concept. They say that to change a person’s behavior, we must first change the self-concept. Dennis Waitley describes this importance when he discusses two levels of the mind, the conscious level and the subconscious level. The conscious level works much like a judge, collecting and evaluating information. The subconscious level functions much like a computer. It stores information and makes it available at a later date. The subconscious never attempts to sort out fact from fiction, truth from misconception. When information flows from the subconscious, it comes forth as fact. Therefore, all our misperceptions eventually become truth and are treated as fact by the conscious level of thinking.
Children work very hard at trying to understand their parents as well as their environment. They are great observers, but horrible interpreters. This is understandable considering their immature brains and limited experience. The sad part is that when we become adults and look back, all our perceptions both accurate and inaccurate become reality. This says that a child is constantly observing, interpreting and storing information in the subconscious. These billions of thoughts and experiences will later become truth, which runs and directs his life. The challenge of working with a child is to help him interpret what he sees and hears in ways that can be used later as proof that he is capable, loveable and responsible. I often wonder what mistaken beliefs have been stored in the minds of children who constantly make poor decisions. Did they misinterpret their parents love in the following ways:
1. Some parents show love by hovering over the child and rescuing him from the harsh world. This could be interpreted by the child as, “My parents knows that I could never handle this world without help.” I am not capable.
2. Some parents show their love by being controlling. These parents constantly tell their child how to lead their life. This is often interpreted as, “My parent knows I am not capable of thinking for myself or being responsible.” I am not capable.
3. I know some parents who show their love by always being available with advice. They allow their children to make many of their own decisions. This is often interpreted as, “My parent knows that I can think for myself!” These children grow up to believe that somewhere within them is a computer with a lifetime guarantee.
Medlar View’s Portaportal Webpage:
Medlar View’s portaportal webpage is available to parents and students. The web address for access is http://guest.portaportal.com/medlarview. It’s a great place for students to practice math skills, math facts, reading listening skills, and computer skills. Parent resources including tutorials, test prep information and printable worksheets are also available. Links to some teacher’s webpages are also on this website.
Weekly Parent Update:
Thank you for subscribing to the “Weekly Parent Update” on the Miamisburg City Schools website. If friends or family members would like to subscribe please share the www.miamisburgcityschools.org website with them.
Staff E-mail:
The format for emailing staff members is first initial last name@miamisburg.k12.oh.us. For example, Mrs. Woods’ email address is swoods@miamisburg.k12.oh.us and Mrs. Ruppert’s email address is sruppert@miamisburg.k12.oh.us. If you email a staff member and do not hear back from them within a couple of days, please call the school. It has come to our attention that multiple parent emails have been filtered out and go directly into a “junk” folder instead of to the teacher’s direct email. Once a teacher is aware that they are having difficulty receiving your email, he/she can initiate email correspondence with you and the filter should then allow your email address to pass through with future correspondence.
Morning Arrival:
Supervision for students is available at 8:35 a.m. for those eating breakfast and 8:40 for all other students. Please adhere to these times when dropping off your child in order to ensure that all students are safe and supervised at arrival.
Community Postings:
Don’t forget to log-on to the district website to obtain information about Miamisburg City Sports organizations, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cheerleading and much more! The district website is www.miamisburgcityschools.org .
