MARCH 2010 Newsletter
Word of the Month – Citizenship
Good Citizenship involves working to make our communities a better place. We are all part of several communities. We have our school community, our neighborhoods, our city, state, and country. Our counselors along with building staff will be discussing how each of us can practice good citizenship in our daily lives. Thanks for your support from home!

Name the New Elementary School
The Miamisburg City School District is seeking input from members of its school community for suggestions of names for its newest school building. The new school building is located on Wood Road. This new facility will house 450 students in grades K-5. The completion of this building will help ease the overcrowding in elementary buildings across the district. Community members interested in submitting a nomination must prepare a two-paragraph statement containing biographical and historical data and reasons justifying their school name choice. Submissions should be sent to: Miamisburg City Schools, 540 E. Park Ave., Miamisburg, OH 45342, attn: Elementary School Naming Committee. All submissions are due no later than March 12. Submissions may be emailed to Communication Officer, Jennifer Jones at jjones@miamisburg.k12.oh.us. A committee comprised of administrators, staff members, community members, parents and students will review all community submissions and present selections to the Board of Education for review and approval.

Changes to School Immunization Requirements
The Ohio Department of Health has made changes to its immunization requirements for school age children for the 2010-2011 school year. Changes Include: Addition of a Tdap booster for all seventh graders. Addition of a second dose of Varicella (chicken pox) for all kindergarteners. Fourth dose of Polio required, beginning with students in kindergarten in 2010. For more information, please contact the nurse at the school your child attends or will attend.

Read Across America
Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated, and spend more time reading, do better in school. While our goal is to promote positive reading experiences for all of our students each day, we will be having special activities along with “guest readers” on March 2nd. This day also marks the 101st birthday of Dr. Seuss, a beloved children’s author. Don’t forget to ask you child about the special literacy activities he/she participated in.

2nd & 5th Grade Students
During the week of March 15th we will be administering the InView and Terra Nova Standardized Tests to all second and fifth graders. The testing will take place in the morning. A more detailed letter will be coming home with all 2nd and 5th grade students on Friday, March 5th. This letter will outline the specific tests administered each day as well as a few helpful hints for parents to ensure your child has a successful experience.
