DESTINATION IMAGINATION:

On March 15 a team from Mark Twain participated in the Regional Tournament for Destination Imagination. (A nationwide program where 5 – 7 members work on a creative problem solving team to solve a challenge)  Our team consisted of five members: 2nd graders Zachary Altman, Benjamin Bierley, Sam Brewster, Hunter Doxey and 1st grader Jacob Doxey.  Our team fell into the non-competitive Rising Stars category which is designed for k – 2 students.  The Rising Stars Challenge was called “TwistDId History.”

The students had to pick an historical event then make up a Play to tell the story of how the team changed history AND make up a song.  They also had to make a magical prop that would help change history.  Best of all, the team had to come up with all of the ideas and make all of the props THEMSELVES!!  No outside interference is allowed!  The team chose to change what happened on the day of the Wright Brothers flight.  The team took a field trip to Carillon Park and were guided through the Wright Brothers Cycle shop, the workshop and the Wright Flyer III.  The information they learned at the park became the inspiration for their original song called “The Wright Brothers Shuffle.”  Because Orville and Wilbur documented everything using journals and photographs, the team decided that a camera would become their magical prop.  The camera was actually a time machine and each time a picture was taken, Orville and Wilbur were transported to a different place and time – Outer Space, the London Bridge, Disney World, Hawaii (in a rain storm), and Mt.Fuji Japan!

On the day of the competition the boys completed an Instant Challenge.  Teams are asked to solve a challenge in a short period of time, without prior knowledge of the challenge.  The students use their quick thinking, team work and problem solving skills to complete the challenge.  They then performed their Central Challenge for a panel of judges.  Each of the students received a medal for their wonderful performance.  Congratulations boys on a job well done!
