December 2009

A note from the principal…
Dear Bear Families,

Throughout the month of December we are planning events and projects for our students that will allow us to build two Empowerment assets:

Youth as Resources-young people are given useful roles in the community Service to Others-young people serve in the community.

Our Character Council members have already had the opportunity to be resources in our community.  On Tuesday, December 1 these student leaders filled a useful role in our community by interacting with the elderly at Kingston Manor in Miamisburg.  The students played games and shared refreshment with the residents there.  Several of the students have participated in the past and were excited to see friends that they had met previously.

This holiday season there have been two opportunities for students to serve the U.S. military community.  First, our third graders have spearheaded a program to collect candy to mail to a military platoon stationed in Iraq.  The third graders have been pen pals with these men and women since the beginning of the year, and had the opportunity to meet one of their pen pals, SPC Jonathan Hooge in the first quarter.  During his visit, Mr. Hooge shared that the soldiers often share candy with the Iraqi boys and girls.  This resonated with our Bear children, so they decided to collect candy to send to Iraq.  All Bear students have been bringing in candy that will be mailed later in the month.  All of our students are excited to have had the opportunity to spread holiday cheer across the world!  Second, families will have the opportunity to participate in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program sponsored by Pitney Bowes and the Red Cross at the PTO sponsored Holiday Dinner on December 4.  In addition to enjoying a great Fazoli’s meal together, decorating cookies, and getting pictures with Santa, our families will have the opportunity to write a letter or make a card to send a holiday message to our service men and women around the globe.

Finally, once again our school will be having “Weeks of Caring.”  Throughout the month of December students are invited to serve the local community by bringing in canned and/or non-perishable food items to school.  All the donated items will be given to local families through Miamisburg Helping Hands.  The entire family can get involved in this community service project by attending our December Family Night.  We will be hosting the annual Canned Movie Night on Tuesday, December 8 at 6 PM.  Students and their families are invited to come to school to enjoy a movie and popcorn as well as experience together the joy of giving to families in need.  The cost of admission?  One canned good, of course!

The holidays are a natural time where we can reflect on the things for which we are grateful and look for ways to serve others.  In the month of December Bear students have had many opportunities to have useful roles in the community and to serve in the community both near and far.  I know that children’s involvement in these projects would not be possible without the support of adults at home.  Thank you for the many ways you have “Empowered” your children to be resources and serve others this Holiday Season.

Happy Holidays,
Amy Dobson

Bear Student of the Month
Miamisburg City Schools is partnering with local businesses Miller Publishing Company and Farmers and Merchants Bank to recognize future leaders and citizens in Miamisburg schools.  Every school in the district will nominate a student, and each month we will highlight Bear’s nominee in our newsletter.  All nominees will be highlighted in the Miamisburg News.  The district winner will be announced with a full page story in the paper.  The district winner will also receive a certificate, a plaque and a $100 savings bond from Farmers and Merchants Bank.

3rd Grade Reading Achievment Test Results are In
Parents of 3rd graders will recall that on October 6, 3rd grade students took the Fall Reading Ohio Achievement Assessment.  The results of this test are in, and Mrs. Dobson would like the opportunity to meet with parents/guardians of each child.  In the meetings we will discuss the state assessment requirements/processes; the categories of advanced, accelerated, proficient, basic and limited; and student strengths and weaknesses in reading.

An invitation to meet with me will go home to the parents/guardians of each 3rd grader.  Be looking for this in your child’s backpack.  The letter outlines the dates and times that I have available to meet with families.  Please call Mrs. Shouse at 866-4691 to schedule an appointment.
